**Storyline:**
Jeffrey Beaumont, a college student, returns to his hometown of Lumberton, North Carolina, after his father suffers a severe stroke. While walking home from the hospital, Jeffrey discovers a severed human ear in a vacant lot. He takes it to Detective John Williams and reconnects with the detective’s daughter, Sandy. She hints that the ear might be linked to Dorothy Vallens, a local lounge singer. Curious, Jeffrey sneaks into Dorothy’s apartment disguised as an exterminator and steals a spare key while Dorothy is distracted by a man in a yellow sport coat, whom Jeffrey calls the “Yellow Man.”
Jeffrey and Sandy attend one of Dorothy’s performances at a nightclub, where she sings “Blue Velvet.” Later, Jeffrey sneaks back into Dorothy’s apartment to investigate. When Dorothy finds him hiding in her closet, she threatens him with a knife and forces him to undress. Their tense encounter is interrupted when Frank Booth, a violent gangster and drug lord, arrives. Frank abuses Dorothy, alternating between fits of rage and sobbing, while inhaling gas from a canister. After Frank leaves, Jeffrey escapes and seeks comfort from Sandy.
Jeffrey soon learns that Frank has kidnapped Dorothy’s husband and son, forcing her into submission. He pieces together that Frank may have severed her husband’s ear to intimidate her. As Jeffrey continues his investigation, he develops a complex relationship with Dorothy, who encourages him to engage in sadomasochistic behavior. Meanwhile, he encounters Frank again, observing his criminal activities and connection to the Yellow Man. When Frank discovers Jeffrey’s involvement, he abducts both Jeffrey and Dorothy, taking them to a hideout where Dorothy’s family is being held hostage.
