Description: Jasmine Francis arrives in San Francisco from New York City and takes a taxi to her sister Ginger’s apartment. Despite claiming financial hardship, Jasmine traveled first class, which surprises Ginger. Jasmine, who recently suffered a nervous breakdown and accumulated significant debt, seeks refuge with her sister. Through flashbacks, we learn that Jasmine’s husband, Hal Francis, was a money manager arrested for defrauding clients, including Ginger and her husband, Augie. Hal swindled them out of $200,000 in lottery winnings, leading to the dissolution of their marriage. After being publicly disgraced, Hal took his own life in prison. Jasmine’s stepson, Danny, cut ties with her, believing she was complicit in Hal’s crimes. Following Hal’s death, Jasmine spiraled into alcoholism, abused anti-anxiety medication, and began talking to herself about her past.
Ginger is now dating a mechanic named Chili, whom Jasmine dislikes for his rough demeanor. Jasmine considers becoming an interior designer, citing her “great taste” and experience in decorating her homes. She plans to take online courses but lacks computer skills, so she enrolls in a basic computer class. With no income, she reluctantly accepts a receptionist job with a dentist who sexually harasses her. When he assaults her, she defends herself and quits.
Jasmine’s fortune changes when she meets Dwight, a wealthy widower and aspiring congressman, at a party. She pretends to be an interior designer, claiming her late husband was a surgeon who died of a heart attack. Impressed by her style, Dwight hires her to decorate his new home. Meanwhile, Ginger begins a romance with Al, whom she met at the same party, and ends her relationship with Chili, who pleads with her to stay.
