Description: In “Blackhat” (2015), a cyberattack causes a nuclear plant in Chai Wan, Hong Kong, to meltdown by overheating its coolant pumps, leading to an explosion. Shortly after, the Mercantile Trade Exchange in Chicago is hacked, triggering a rise in soy futures. Both the Chinese government and the FBI trace the attack to a remote access tool (RAT) developed by Captain Chen Dawai of the People’s Liberation Army’s cyber warfare unit and Nicholas Hathaway, his former MIT roommate and now a convicted hacker. Chen enlists his sister, Lien, a networking engineer, for assistance and collaborates with FBI Special Agent Carol Barrett.
Hathaway, serving prison time for bank hacking, is temporarily released to aid the investigation. He negotiates a deal to have his sentence commuted if he helps identify and capture the hacker. Despite being monitored via an ankle bracelet and supervised by Deputy U.S. Marshal Mark Jessup, Hathaway manipulates the GPS tracker on Jessup’s phone to pursue his own leads. He arranges a meeting with the hacker’s associate at a restaurant but discovers they’re being monitored via a hidden camera. Hathaway sends a message to the hacker, signaling that he’s on their trail.
The investigation leads the team to Hong Kong, where they collaborate with Police Inspector Alex Trang. They trace the financial transactions to a paramilitary operative named Elias Kassar. During a raid on Kassar’s hideout in a drainage tunnel, a violent shootout ensues, resulting in the deaths of Trang and several officers as Kassar and his men escape. The film follows Hathaway’s journey as he races against time to stop the hacker and prevent further chaos.
