Description: In 1995, Natasha Romanoff and Yelena Belova, as young girls, are taken from their home in Ohio by their surrogate parents, Alexei Shostakov, also known as the Red Guardian, and Melina Vostokoff, a former Black Widow. After their mission ends, both girls are sent to the Red Room for advanced training.
In 2016, following the Avengers’ conflict at Leipzig/Halle Airport, Natasha becomes a fugitive for violating the Sokovia Accords. She escapes from U.S. Secretary of State Thaddeus Ross and hides in a safehouse in Norway, reconnecting with her ally, Rick Mason. Meanwhile, Yelena, still under the Red Room’s control, kills a former Black Widow but encounters a substance called Red Dust, which frees her from their influence. She sends the antidote to Natasha’s safehouse, hoping for her help.
While carrying the antidote, Natasha is attacked by Taskmaster, who seeks the Red Dust. After evading Taskmaster, Natasha discovers the Dust came from Yelena. They reunite in Budapest but are ambushed by Black Widows. During their escape, Natasha learns the Red Room remains active and its leader, Dreykov, whom she thought she had killed, is still alive. Her mission to join S.H.I.E.L.D. involved eliminating Dreykov, but the act of destroying a building with him and his daughter Antonia inside has haunted her.
Natasha and Yelena meet back with Mason, who provides them with an aircraft. They free Alexei from prison to locate Dreykov and learn they must consult Melina, who has been living on a farm experimenting with mind control on pigs. Though they acknowledge their family was not genuine, the group admits they’d wished otherwise. Melina reveals their location to Dreykov, leading to their capture and transport to the Red Room’s aerial base.
