Nina Sayers, a 28-year-old dancer, lives with her overly protective mother and performs with a New York City ballet company. The company is preparing to open its season with Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake. After the retirement of the prima ballerina, Beth MacIntyre, the artistic director, Thomas Leroy, seeks a new lead to portray both the innocent White Swan, Odette, and the sensual Black Swan, Odile. Nina auditions, delivering a perfect performance as Odette but struggling to embody Odile.
The next day, Nina pleads with Thomas to reconsider her for the role. When he kisses her forcefully, she bites him and flees the office. Later, she discovers she has been cast as the lead. At a gala event, an intoxicated Beth accuses Nina of sleeping with Thomas for the role. The following day, Nina learns that Beth was hit by a car, with Thomas suspecting it was a suicide attempt.
During rehearsals, Thomas encourages Nina to observe Lily, a new dancer who resembles Nina but exudes a carefree attitude. Nina begins experiencing hallucinations of a doppelgänger and finds mysterious scratches on her back.
One night, despite her mother’s objections, Nina goes out for drinks with Lily. Lily offers her an ecstasy capsule, which Nina initially declines, but Lily secretly adds the drug to her drink. Under its influence, Nina flirts with strangers and dances with Lily. They return to Nina’s apartment late at night, where Nina argues with her mother, locks herself in her room, and has a sexual encounter with Lily. The next morning, she wakes up alone, still locked in her room, and rushes to the dress rehearsal.
