**Storyline:**
In 1975, James “Whitey” Bulger, the leader of the Winter Hill Gang, dominates organized crime in South Boston. Alongside his trusted associates Stephen Flemmi, newcomer Kevin Weeks, and ruthless hitman Johnny Martorano, Bulger maintains his grip on the criminal underworld. He lives with his partner, Lindsey Cyr, and their young son, Douglas.
Bulger faces competition from the Angiulo Brothers, a rival gang from North End connected to the New England Mafia. FBI agent John Connolly, who grew up in South Boston and was close to Whitey and his brother Billy Bulger—now the Massachusetts Senate President—returns to the area.
After the Angiulo Brothers send an assassin to murder a Winter Hill member, Whitey reluctantly agrees to become an informant for Connolly. The agent believes Whitey can help dismantle the Angiulo Brothers’ operations. While Whitey despises the idea of being a rat, he sees the advantage of gaining protection for himself, his gang, and his family. Tragedy strikes when Douglas is diagnosed with Reye syndrome, leading Lindsey to make the heartbreaking decision to remove him from life support, despite Whitey’s objections.
As Whitey collaborates with Connolly, he manipulates his informant status to shield his criminal activities. With Connolly’s help, the FBI plants wiretaps in the Angiulo Brothers’ hideouts, leading to their arrest and cementing Whitey’s dominance. Connolly’s blind loyalty grows, as he even invites Whitey and his gang to his home, alarming his wife, Marianne, who notices his moral decline and his acceptance of illicit gifts and money.
