**Storyline:**
In 1993, after the collapse of the central government during the Somali civil war, the United Nations Security Council authorizes a peacekeeping military operation. When most of the peacekeepers withdraw, the militia in Mogadishu, loyal to Mohamed Farrah Aidid, declares war on the remaining UN personnel. In response, U.S. President Bill Clinton deploys Task Force Ranger, consisting of the 3rd Battalion/75th Ranger Regiment, Delta Force operators, and the 160th SOAR flight crew, to Mogadishu to capture Aidid, who has declared himself president.
To strengthen his control and suppress the population in the south, Aidid and his militia seize Red Cross food supplies, leaving the UN forces unable to intervene directly. Outside Mogadishu, Rangers and Delta Force capture Osman Ali Atto, a faction leader supplying arms to Aidid’s militia. The U.S. then plans a mission to apprehend two of Aidid’s top advisors, Omar Salad Elmi and Abdi Hassan Awale Qeybdiid.
The U.S. forces include both seasoned soldiers and new recruits, such as 18-year-old Private First Class Todd Blackburn and Specialist John Grimes, a desk clerk. Staff Sergeant Matthew Eversmann takes command of Ranger Chalk Four after his lieutenant suffers a seizure. Eversmann expresses respect and compassion for the Somali people, acknowledging the horrors of civil war and emphasizing the choice to either help or watch the country’s downfall on CNN.
The operation begins, with Delta Force successfully capturing Aidid’s advisors. However, the Rangers and helicopters escorting the ground-extraction convoy face intense enemy fire. Blackburn sustains severe injuries after falling from a Black Hawk helicopter, prompting three Humvees led by Staff Sergeant Jeff Struecker to detach from the convoy and return him to the UN-controlled Mogadishu Airport.
