Description: “Black Death,” a 2010 German-British action horror film directed by Christopher Smith, is based on an original screenplay by Dario Poloni. The movie features notable actors such as Sean Bean, Eddie Redmayne, and Carice van Houten. Though Smith is not credited as a writer, he significantly altered the second half of the script, including crafting a new ending. Filming was done in chronological order, which is uncommon in the industry.
Set in 1348 during a plague-ridden medieval England, the story follows Osmund, a novice monk who is secretly in love with a young woman named Averill. When the plague strikes his monastery, Osmund urges Averill to leave, and she promises to wait for him in a nearby forest for one week. Osmund then volunteers to guide a group of soldiers—Wolfstan, Griff, Dalywag, Mold, Ivo, and Swire—led by Ulric, who are on a mission to locate a village rumored to be controlled by a necromancer.
As they journey to the village, Griff and Ivo meet their deaths. Osmund discovers Averill’s bloodstained clothing and believes she has died. Upon reaching the village, they encounter Hob and Langiva, the village leaders. The soldiers are drugged, and Osmund learns that Averill’s body is in the village. He witnesses Langiva perform a ritual to revive her.
The group is captured and placed in a water-filled pit, where they are given the choice to renounce God for freedom. When they refuse, Dalywag is crucified and disemboweled. Swire succumbs to fear and renounces his faith, only to be hanged by the villagers. Osmund is later brought to Averill and, believing she is suffering, stabs her to save her soul.
This gripping tale of horror and survival is set against the backdrop of a devastating plague, blending historical drama with supernatural elements.
