Description: Black Clover: Sword of the Wizard King is a 2023 Japanese animated film directed by Ayataka Tanemura and produced by Pierrot. Based on the Black Clover manga series by Yūki Tabata, the movie premiered in Japanese theaters and on Netflix globally on June 16, 2023. The story is set after the events of season 4 of the series.
The film follows Asta, a boy born without magical abilities in a world where magic is everything, and his rival Yuno, a gifted mage chosen by the legendary 4-leaf Grimoire. Together, they face numerous powerful foes, striving to overcome challenges and achieve their goal of becoming the Wizard King. However, their ambitions are challenged by the resurrection of Conrad Leto, a former Wizard King once revered in the Clover Kingdom who turned against it and was sealed away. Now, Conrad plans to use the Imperial Sword to bring back three of the most feared Wizard Kings in history: Edward Avalaché, Princia Funnybunny, and Jester Garandaros, aiming to seize control of the kingdom.
The film adaptation was first announced in Weekly Shōnen Jump in March 2021, with Yūki Tabata serving as chief supervisor and original character designer. In October 2022, it was confirmed that the production would involve the returning staff and cast from the TV series. Initially scheduled for release on March 31, 2023, the film was delayed to June 16 due to production challenges caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. On April 29, the film’s production was officially confirmed to be completed.
