This issue was highlighted after founder Jason Blum’s controversial remark that few women are inclined to direct horror films. After backlash, Blumhouse hired Sophia Takal, known for her work on *Into the Dark* series’ *New Year, New You*, a clever satire on self-care culture. Takal was then tasked with reimagining *Black Christmas*, a 1974 slasher film often overshadowed by *Halloween* but considered a genre pioneer.
Announced in June 2019 and released just six months later, the 2019 version of *Black Christmas feels rushed. The film lacks suspense, atmosphere, and tension, appearing low-budget and poorly executed. It even makes the 2006 remake seem like a forgotten masterpiece in comparison.
