Description: Black Box (2020) is a compelling drama about Nolan Wright, a man who survives a car crash but suffers from amnesia. Though physically unharmed, he loses his wife in the accident and struggles to adjust to life as a single father to his 10-year-old daughter, Ava. Nolan’s memory loss makes even simple tasks, like cooking or picking up Ava from school, challenging. Ava, mature and precocious beyond her years, supports him and covers for his shortcomings in social situations.
Concerned by warnings from Ava’s teacher about his forgetfulness and facing setbacks at work, Nolan seeks an experimental procedure to recover his memory. With the guidance of his friend, Dr. Gary Yeboah, and neurologist Dr. Brooks, Nolan undergoes hypnosis and uses a device called the “black box” to explore his mind and uncover his past.
The journey is far from easy. Nolan encounters fragmented images and faceless figures, often being confronted by a terrifying monster that forces him to retreat from his memories. Outside of Dr. Brooks’ sessions, however, he begins to recall small glimpses of his past, helping him rebuild his relationship with Ava.
As the procedure progresses, Nolan grows suspicious of a hidden truth in his past. Despite Dr. Yeboah’s reassurances, Nolan’s anxiety intensifies. In a breakthrough moment, he confronts the monster in his memories and looks into a mirror, only to discover a shocking revelation: he is not Nolan Wright but Thomas Brooks, Dr. Brooks’ son. This realization brings clarity to his identity but leaves him grappling with the truth of his existence.
