Description: Black Adam is a 2022 American superhero film centered on the DC Comics character of the same name. Produced by New Line Cinema, DC Films, Seven Bucks Productions, and FlynnPictureCo., it serves as a spin-off from *Shazam!* (2019) and the 11th installment in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU). Directed by Jaume Collet-Serra and written by Adam Sztykiel, Rory Haines, and Sohrab Noshirvani, the film features Dwayne Johnson in the lead role. The cast also includes Aldis Hodge, Noah Centineo, Sarah Shahi, Marwan Kenzari, Quintessa Swindell, Bodhi Sabongui, and Pierce Brosnan.
Dwayne Johnson was initially set to appear in *Shazam!* but was later confirmed to portray the antagonist, Black Adam, in September 2014. However, the production team decided to give the character his own standalone film. Adam Sztykiel was brought on board in October 2017, and Jaume Collet-Serra joined as director in June 2019. The film was initially slated for release in December 2021, but the COVID-19 pandemic caused delays. Filming took place from April to August 2021 at Trilith Studios in Atlanta, Georgia, with additional scenes shot in Los Angeles. The movie premiered in Mexico City on October 3, 2022, and was released in the United States on October 21, 2022, by Warner Bros. Pictures.
The plot is set in the ancient city of Kahndaq, which was ruled by the tyrannical king Anh-Kot. He sought to create the Crown of Sabbac, a powerful artifact that granted immense strength to its wearer. To achieve this, he enslaved his people and forced them to mine “Eternium,” a magical crystal essential for the crown’s creation. A slave named Teth-Adam discovered the crystal but was killed by an overseer. His son, Hurut, led a rebellion against Anh-Kot but was captured and sentenced to death. Hurut was unexpectedly granted the powers of Shazam and tasked with overthrowing the king. In the modern day, Khandaq is once again under oppression, this time by the criminal organization Intergang.
The film received mixed reviews from critics. It explores themes of power, justice, and redemption while expanding the DC Extended Universe with its introduction of the Justice Society of America (JSA).
