Description: The 2018 film “Bidai Byomkesh” follows the iconic detective Byomkesh Bakshi, played by Abir Chatterjee, in his later years as he faces one of the most crucial cases of his career. Aging and ailing, Byomkesh must prove that his estranged son, Abhimanyu, portrayed by Joy Sengupta, is not a murderer. As the story unfolds, it becomes clear that there is more to the case than meets the eye, leaving viewers questioning whether Byomkesh can solve it before stepping away from his life of solving mysteries.
Taking on the challenge of creating a spin-off centered around Bengal’s beloved sleuth, director Debaloy Bhattacharya delivers a story that keeps fans engaged. The film explores Byomkesh’s sharp wit as he battles the limitations of age, addressing lingering questions about the character’s legacy. While the first half builds anticipation with a clever setup, the story takes a leap forward in time, introducing an older Byomkesh and his grandson, Satyaki, also played by Abir Chatterjee.
Despite some shortcomings in makeup and portrayal, Abir’s performance brings depth to the character, particularly in emotional scenes. His dual role as Satyaki adds a refreshing contrast to his portrayal of the seasoned detective. However, the film’s attempt to capture Byomkesh’s final triumph leaves room for debate about its overall execution. While it honors the detective’s enduring appeal, it also prompts reflection on whether it truly lives up to the legacy of Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay’s original stories.
