**Storyline:**
Set in post-World War II Rome, in the Val Melaina neighborhood, the film follows Antonio Ricci (Lamberto Maggiorani), a man struggling to find work to support his wife, Maria (Lianella Carell), their son, Bruno (Enzo Staiola), and their infant child. When Antonio is offered a job posting advertising bills, he hesitates because the position requires a bicycle. Determined to help, Maria pawns her prized bedsheets—part of her dowry—to retrieve Antonio’s bicycle from the pawnshop.
On his first day of work, Antonio’s bicycle is stolen by a young man (Vittorio Antonucci) while he is on a ladder. Despite chasing the thief, Antonio loses him due to the help of the thief’s accomplices. The police offer little assistance, so Antonio turns to the Piazza Vittorio market, where stolen goods often appear. Accompanied by friends and Bruno, Antonio searches for his bicycle but finds only a similar one with mismatched serial numbers.
Later, at the Porta Portese market, Antonio and Bruno spot the thief with an elderly man. Although they pursue him, the thief escapes, and the old man pretends not to know anything. Their search leads them to a church, but the thief slips away once more.
In a final attempt, Antonio confronts the thief near a brothel, but the situation turns hostile. The thief feigns a fit, and the crowd accuses Antonio of causing the trouble. Bruno brings a policeman, who searches the thief’s home but finds no evidence. With no witnesses and the thief likely to have an alibi, Antonio and Bruno leave in despair, facing mockery and threats from the onlookers.
