Description: Bhoomi 2021 is a Tamil film that explores the struggles of India’s agricultural sector through a geopolitical lens. Directed by Lakshman, the movie stars Jayam Ravi as Bhoominathan, a NASA scientist with aspirations of colonizing Mars through farming. However, his perspective shifts when he visits his native village in Tamil Nadu and witnesses the decline of agriculture. Realizing the dire state of farming in India, he abandons his dream of creating a new world and instead focuses on saving Earth from corporate greed. His plan is to promote farming as a financially viable and independent profession.
The film’s release was delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic but eventually arrived at a time when India was experiencing massive farmer protests against new agricultural reforms. While the movie touches on important themes like linguistic and cultural nationalism, as well as Dravidian ideology, it falls short in execution. Despite having good intentions and educational potential, Bhoomi struggles to balance its message with compelling storytelling, resulting in a heavy-handed and poorly crafted political drama.
