Gerard Soeteman, who collaborated with Verhoeven on eight previous films, adapted the book but distanced himself due to the film’s strong focus on sexuality. Virginie Efira, who played a supporting role in *Elle*, starred as Benedetta, portraying her religious and erotic visions. Verhoeven co-wrote the final draft with David Birke.
