True crime documentaries, police procedurals, and limited series inspired by real events have always captivated audiences, and the darker the tale, the better. When Netflix announced its revival of *Unsolved Mysteries*, it sparked an excitement reminiscent of the joy brought by a favorite Chinese takeout or the return of a long-lost love. Naturally, my curiosity was piqued upon hearing the premise of writer-director Clayton Scott’s debut feature, *Below the Fold*, which premiered at this year’s Panic Fest.
The film begins with the mysterious disappearance of a young girl. Intriguing, right? It doesn’t stop there. The opening scenes are filled with eerie visuals—a house at night with an open door, a forgotten phone off the hook, and a cigarette slowly burning in an ashtray. These haunting images, frozen in time like the mysteries of the Mary Celeste or the lost colony of Roanoke, immediately draw viewers in, begging the question, “What happened here?” However, don’t expect the film’s 92-minute runtime to provide straightforward answers.
The story follows David (Davis DeRock), a small-town journalist assigned by his irritable editor, Jason (Daniel Compo), to cover the anniversary of the unsolved disappearance of twelve-year-old Susie Potter. As if reopening the town’s painful past wasn’t enough, David is also tasked with helping Lisa (Sarah McGuire), the paper’s newest writer, settle into her role. Complicating matters further, David and Lisa share a complicated history—somewhere between colleagues and former lovers, their relationship ended abruptly when Lisa left without warning.
Old tensions resurface between the two as they navigate their professional and personal dynamics. When Lisa insists on covering the disappearance, the situation becomes even more charged. Despite their unresolved issues, David and Lisa prove to be a compelling team as they delve deeper into the town’s dark secrets.
