Description: Bekas (2012) is a Turkish film set in early 1990s Iraq, a time of immense hardship and struggle. When people think of Iraq, war and Saddam Hussein often come to mind, but there’s another side to the story—Kurdistan, a region infamous for its challenges. The movie tells the touching tale of two homeless brothers, Zana (6) and Dana (10), who are barely surviving in this harsh environment. Their lives take a dramatic turn when they catch a glimpse of Superman through a hole in the wall of a local cinema. Inspired by what they see, the brothers dream of going to America to meet Superman, believing he can solve all their problems, make their lives easier, and punish those who have wronged them. Zana begins compiling a list of people he wants Superman to punish, with Saddam Hussein at the top. Meanwhile, Dana devises a practical plan for their journey, which includes securing money, passports, transportation, and a way to cross the border. Despite having none of these resources, the brothers remain determined to pursue their dream. Bekas is a poignant story of resilience, hope, and the power of imagination in the face of adversity.
