**Storyline:**
In 1972, Mason Skiles, a U.S. diplomat, lives in Beirut with his Lebanese wife, Nadia. They take in Karim, a 13-year-old Palestinian boy who claims to have no family. During a party, Skiles’ friend, CIA agent Cal Riley, confronts him, seeking to question Karim, whose brother Rafid is linked to the 1972 Munich massacre. The event is disrupted when Rafid abducts Karim, leading to a shootout that tragically claims Nadia’s life.
A decade later, Skiles is now an alcoholic labor arbitrator in New England. He is approached by Sully, an old client, on behalf of the U.S. government, who offers him an opportunity to deliver a lecture in Lebanon. Although hesitant, Skiles agrees and travels to Beirut. Upon arrival, he meets several officials, including CIA agents Donald Gaines and Sandy Crowder, NSA Colonel Gary Ruzak, and Ambassador Frank Whalen. He learns that Cal Riley has been kidnapped, and the captors specifically demand Skiles as the negotiator.
During negotiations, Skiles discovers that Karim now leads the kidnappers’ organization. Karim demands the release of his brother Rafid in exchange for Riley, but the Americans deny holding Rafid. Suspecting Israel may have Rafid, Skiles and Ruzak travel there, only to find that Israel is not detaining him. Returning to Beirut, Skiles meets Alice, Riley’s wife, who blames him for Riley’s abduction, citing Riley’s lingering guilt over Nadia’s death.
The following day, while Skiles is lecturing at the American University of Beirut, a car bomb explodes outside the building.
