The story begins as a nervous armed man enters a child’s room, and a sudden disturbance leads him to fire his weapon. The gunshot wakes the child, leaving the man in tears. Later, Jessie and Mark Hobson, grieving the loss of their young son Sean to a tragic bathtub accident, decide to foster an eight-year-old boy named Cody Morgan.
On his first night with them, Cody shares his fear of a nightmarish creature called “the Canker Man.” Jessie reassures him that it’s just a bad dream with no real harm. That same night, Jessie and Mark witness a surreal scene as glowing, multicolored butterflies fill their living room. When Cody wakes up, the butterflies vanish.
At school, Cody befriends a girl named Annie and has a confrontation with a bullying student. Back at home, Cody notices a photo of Sean and learns about his foster parents’ loss, sharing that his own mother has also passed away.
As Cody’s unique ability to bring his dreams to life becomes apparent, Jessie begins to exploit it, hoping to reconnect with her deceased son. She shows Cody home videos of Sean, and that night, the couple sees their son once again. However, Mark grows concerned that Jessie is using Cody for his gift rather than caring for him as a son, leading to tension in their relationship.
Cody’s nightmares intensify, and “the Canker Man” terrorizes a school bully while Annie watches in horror. Meanwhile, Jessie consults a doctor about Cody’s sleep issues and secretly administers prescribed medication to him, hoping to keep Sean’s apparition alive. This decision backfires when Sean’s presence turns into a horrifying nightmare, leaving Mark desperate to wake Cody up.
The film explores themes of grief, loss, and the dangers of longing for the past, as the couple learns to face their pain while navigating Cody’s extraordinary abilities.
