Storyline:
Mr. Bean, a kind but clumsy and accident-prone security guard at London’s National Gallery, often sleeps on the job, much to the annoyance of the gallery’s board. Despite their desire to fire him, the board’s chairman prevents it. Instead, they assign Bean to oversee the transfer of James McNeill Whistler’s 1871 painting, “Arrangement in Grey and Black No.1” (also known as “Whistler’s Mother”), to the Grierson Art Gallery in Los Angeles. The painting was purchased for $50 million by philanthropist General Newton.
David Langley, Grierson’s curator, is initially impressed by Bean’s fabricated reputation as “Dr. Bean” and volunteers to host him for two months. However, David’s wife Alison and their children, Kevin and Jennifer, are less enthusiastic. Bean’s antics, including mishaps at the airport and accidentally breaking a family heirloom, lead Alison to move to her mother’s house with the kids.
As time goes on, David begins to doubt Bean’s expertise, especially after Bean causes chaos at Pacific Park and disrupts a dinner party with the gallery’s owner. It becomes clear that Bean knows nothing about art.
A catastrophe occurs when Bean accidentally stains the Whistler painting with ink and then uses paint thinner, removing the original face. In a desperate attempt to fix it, Bean draws the face with a pen, horrifying David.
Fearing the consequences, David becomes despondent and turns to alcohol, though his family eventually returns out of sympathy. Determined to set things right, Bean sneaks into the gallery, replaces the damaged painting with a reprinted poster coated in egg white to mimic the original, and successfully deceives everyone at the opening event. Despite his awkward speech, Bean somehow wins the crowd’s approval.
