Description: “Battle of Memories” (2021) is a Chinese science fiction crime thriller directed by Leste Chen, starring Huang Bo, Xu Jinglei, Duan Yihong, Yang Zishan, and Ann Hsu. Originally released in China on April 28, 2017, the film follows the story of Jiang Feng, a writer who undergoes a procedure to erase certain memories. However, an incident at the memory center causes him to lose his memory-restore-key card. When he delivers divorce papers to his wife, she refuses to sign them until he restores his memories.
After the restoration procedure, Feng finds himself trapped in the memories of a serial killer. He informs the police, claiming to witness the murders from the killer’s perspective, where he sees himself as the murderer. Initially skeptical, officers Shen Hanqiang and Lei Zi begin to believe Feng after noticing similarities between his descriptions and the actual crime scenes. Feng realizes the killer has his memories and may target his wife, leading him to stage an escape, which fails.
At the police station, Feng’s wife, Zhang Daichen, befriends medical officer Chen Shanshan. As the officers await Feng’s memories to reveal the killer’s identity, Lei Zi deduces the killer might be a woman close to the victim, suspecting officer Chan. Feng escapes again to save his wife, who is with Chan, but inadvertently disrupts her safety.
The truth is later uncovered: officer Shen Hanqiang is the actual killer, using officer Chan to cover his tracks. Shen kills Chan and attempts to kill Feng, but Daichen intervenes. Unable to harm her due to inheriting Feng’s memories, Shen hesitates, allowing Lei Zi to arrive and arrest him. Feng and Daichen reconcile, bringing the story to a close.
“Battle of Memories” combines elements of suspense, science fiction, and crime, delivering a gripping narrative about identity, memory, and redemption.
