Description: “Batman: Gotham by Gaslight” is a 2018 animated superhero film produced by Warner Bros. Animation and distributed by Warner Bros. Home Entertainment. It offers an alternate take on the iconic DC Comics character, Batman, and is the 30th installment in the DC Universe Animated Original Movies series. Directed by Sam Liu and written by James Krieg, the film is loosely based on the graphic novel of the same name by Brian Augustyn and Mike Mignola.
The movie premiered at the “DC in D.C.” event in Washington, D.C., on January 12, 2018, and was later released digitally on January 23, followed by DVD and Blu-ray on February 6. Notably, it was the last film released during the lifetime of Benjamin Melniker, a longtime DC producer who passed away a month later at the age of 104.
Set in Victorian-era Gotham City, the story follows Bruce Wayne as Batman, a vigilante feared by both criminals and civilians. During his quest for justice, Batman saves a wealthy couple from a robbery orchestrated by three orphans and their abusive handler, Big Bill Dust. Meanwhile, a serial killer known as Jack the Ripper terrorizes the city, targeting impoverished women, including Ivy, an orphan turned exotic dancer.
As suspicions grow, Gotham’s citizens begin to believe Batman and Jack the Ripper are the same person. Selina Kyle, a stage actress and advocate for women in “Skinner’s End,” confronts Gotham’s police authorities for their failure to stop the murders. She later volunteers as bait to lure the Ripper, leading to a confrontation where Batman intervenes. Together, Batman and Commissioner James Gordon vow to bring the killer to justice.
Bruce Wayne, alongside his friend Harvey Dent, encounters Selina Kyle at the Monarch Theatre. As their bond deepens, Bruce uncovers a connection between the murdered women and Sister Leslie, who had cared for both Bruce and Selina in their youth. The film weaves a gripping tale of mystery, action, and connections in a unique historical setting.
