Description: Set in 1750s Ireland, *Barry Lyndon* follows the life of Redmond Barry. After his father dies in a duel over a horse sale, Barry’s mother dedicates herself to raising her only son. Barry becomes infatuated with his older cousin, Nora Brady, who is set to marry a wealthy British Army captain, John Quin. In a fit of passion, Barry challenges Quin to a duel, shoots him, and flees to Dublin. However, he is robbed by a highwayman named Captain Feeney. Disillusioned, Barry enlists in the British Army, only to discover later that the duel was staged by Nora’s family to get rid of him.
Barry’s regiment is sent to fight in the Seven Years’ War in Germany. After witnessing the death of his friend Captain Grogan, Barry deserts the army. While attempting to reach neutral Holland, he meets and briefly falls in love with Frau Lieschen. Soon after, he is captured by Prussian Captain Potzdorf, who gives him a choice: face execution as a deserter or join the Prussian Army. Barry chooses the latter and eventually earns recognition from King Frederick II for saving Potzdorf’s life in battle.
After the war ends in 1763, Barry works for Potzdorf’s uncle in the Prussian Ministry of Police. Tasked with spying on the Chevalier de Balibari, a gambler suspected of being an Austrian spy, Barry instead befriends him. Together, they cheat the Prince of Tübingen at cards, leading to a confrontation. When the authorities move to expel the Chevalier, Barry helps him escape, disguises himself as the Chevalier, and leaves Prussia.
The film explores themes of ambition, betrayal, and the pursuit of wealth and status in 18th-century Europe.
