Description: Bahay na Pula, also known as Red House, is a 2022 film that follows the story of a young couple, Raffy (Xian Lim) and Jane (Julia Barretto). Their task is to finalize the sale of their ancestral home in Pola. However, their plans are disrupted when the mayor declares the house historically significant and forbids its demolition or relocation. Adding to their troubles, Jane begins experiencing vivid dreams that uncover the hidden history of the property.
The film initially drew attention due to its lead actors, Julia Barretto and Xian Lim. However, it falls short of expectations, lacking the suspense and thrill typical of horror films. Instead of genuine scares, it relies on overused sound effects and a dull color palette, resulting in a monotonous experience. The narrative often feels more like a drama than a horror, with an unengaging and incomplete storyline.
Several plot points, such as a malversation case involving Xian Lim’s character and conflicts with Marco Gumabao’s role, seem unnecessary and disrupt the flow. The performances also disappoint, with Lim and Barretto lacking chemistry and delivering awkward, amateurish portrayals. The only standout performance comes from Erlinda Villalobos, who shines as Aling Ising, the mysterious caretaker of the ancestral house.
Overall, Bahay na Pula fails to deliver as a horror film, plagued by incoherence, lack of tension, and weak execution.
