Description: In August 2005, Terence McDonagh (Nicolas Cage), a New Orleans police sergeant, discovers a prisoner during the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. After mocking the man, McDonagh jumps into the water to save him from drowning. For his actions, he is promoted to lieutenant and awarded a medal, but he sustains a severe back injury, leading to a prescription for Vicodin to manage the pain.
Six months later, McDonagh becomes addicted to painkillers and starts using cocaine and cannabis regularly. His girlfriend, Frankie Donnenfeld (Eva Mendes), a prostitute, shares his drug habits. McDonagh manipulates Heidi (Fairuza Balk), a former colleague, to provide him with drugs from the evidence room. His strained relationship with his father, Pat (Tom Bower), a recovering alcoholic, and his stepmother, Genevieve (Jennifer Coolidge), worsens. Throughout the film, McDonagh abuses his authority to intimidate others and steal drugs.
McDonagh is tasked with investigating the murders of five Senegalese immigrants who were killed for selling drugs in a gang leader’s territory. The gang leader, Big Fate (Alvin ‘Xzibit’ Joiner), has two associates: Midget (Lucius Baston) and G (Tim Bellow). After their arrest, Big Fate voluntarily arrives at the police station with his lawyer. During the investigation, McDonagh finds Frankie beaten by a client, Justin (Shea Whigham). He threatens Justin and extorts $10,000 from him. Later, McDonagh tracks down a missing witness by threatening the witness’s grandmother, a nursing home worker, to reveal the witness’s whereabouts.
