Set in Los Angeles during the vibrant 1920s, the story follows Manuel “Manny” Torres, a Mexican immigrant with dreams of becoming a filmmaker. During a chaotic party at the mansion of Kinoscope Studios executive Don Wallach, Manny encounters Nellie LaRoy, a bold and ambitious aspiring actress from New Jersey, and is instantly captivated by her. As they share their aspirations, Manny expresses his desire to be part of something significant, while Nellie confidently declares herself a star. Amid the wild festivities, which include a defecating elephant and a drug-overdosed actress, Manny begins to navigate the eccentric world of Hollywood.
At the party, Manny also crosses paths with Chinese-American cabaret performer Lady Fay Zhu and African-American jazz trumpeter Sidney Palmer. Nellie’s energetic dance catches the attention of Wallach, who casts her in a film, replacing the overdosed actress. Nellie’s unpolished charm quickly overshadows the film’s established star, Constance Moore. Meanwhile, Manny befriends Jack Conrad, a troubled but kind-hearted film star, who helps him secure a job at Kinoscope Studios.
As Manny climbs the ranks, Nellie rises to fame as an “it-girl,” her exploits chronicled by gossip columnist Elinor St. John. However, the advent of sound technology in the late 1920s disrupts the silent film era, forcing Manny to adapt to the changing industry. His determination and resourcefulness eventually lead him to directorial opportunities, as he strives to leave his mark in the evolving world of cinema.
