Description: Jill Adams, portrayed by Gina Rodriguez, completes her night shift and is seen involved in drug dealing. She heads to pick up her son Noah and daughter Matilda from their grandmother Doris. On the way, she falls asleep in the car but is awakened by her daughter. As they continue driving, their car is hit and ends up in a lake. Matilda almost drowns, and the police inform them that all electrical systems and vehicles are malfunctioning. Upon reaching the hospital, they find chaos with coma patients suddenly waking up. The three return to Doris’ house, where she allows them to stay overnight. Jill attempts to sleep but fails, resorting to meditation.
Doris mentions she tried yoga but found no relief. Noah also shares his inability to sleep and points out shooting stars, which Jill identifies as satellites. When Jill goes to work, she notices the entire neighborhood is awake. At her workplace, psychiatrist Murphy, played by Jennifer Jason Lee, informs Jill that all technology is down. They discuss the consequences of the human body not getting enough sleep, with disease symptoms appearing at double the rate, leading the world into chaos. Everyone is either awake or dead, with no one unconscious. Jill recalls that Matilda can still sleep and rushes home to find her at church. The pastor talks to Matilda about his dark history with drugs and his belief in being given a second chance at life. He wants to pray with Matilda, grateful for her ability to sleep. Jill opposes Matilda going to the hub, but the pastor sees Matilda as a beacon of hope, with people wanting to sacrifice her. Jill and Noah arrive to take Matilda away, but Doris refuses to let her go.
