Description: Avijatrik is a 2021 Bengali-language drama film written and directed by Subhrajit Mitra, produced by Gaurang Jalan, and co-produced by Madhur Bhandarkar. The screenplay is adapted from Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay’s novel “Aparajito.” This film serves as the sequel and concluding part of Satyajit Ray’s Apu Trilogy. Released under Gaurang Films and Bhandarkar Entertainment, it premiered at the Kolkata International Film Festival in January 2021 and hit theaters on December 3, 2021.
The story follows Apu, a man with a deep wanderlust, who embarks on a journey to explore the world and experience its diverse layers. Centered around the profound bond between Apu and his 6-year-old son Kajol, the film beautifully portrays their mutual dependence and affection. Apu, a warm and loving father, raises Kajol alone after the tragic loss of Kajol’s mother during childbirth. Despite this, Apu’s late wife, Aparna, remains a significant presence in his thoughts, often engaging him in philosophical reflections.
The narrative unfolds as Apu and Kajol travel from Kolkata to northern India after Apu accepts a teaching position at a wealthy estate. Their journey leaves an indelible mark on Apu’s heart, especially when he unexpectedly reunites with his childhood sweetheart, Leela. Leela, now in declining health, is on her way to Benaras to visit her daughter, who lives with her grandmother. Their reunion is bittersweet as Leela, burdened by a painful marriage, confesses her enduring love for Apu before passing away in his arms.
Bound by a promise, Apu stops his journey to visit Leela’s mother and daughter in Benaras. The film uses the train as a metaphor for life’s journey, with death once again playing a pivotal role in Apu’s life. Through its exploration of relationships and life’s transient nature, Avijatrik captures the essence of Satyajit Ray’s timeless storytelling.
