Description: “Avatar: The Way of Water,” the 2022 epic science fiction film, serves as the highly anticipated sequel to James Cameron’s 2009 blockbuster, “Avatar.” Distributed by 20th Century Studios, it marks the second entry in the Avatar series. Cameron first expressed interest in sequels following the success of the original “Avatar,” with plans for the first two sequels announced in 2010. “The Way of Water” was initially slated for a 2014 release. However, the project faced significant delays due to the expansion to five total films and the groundbreaking development of underwater performance capture technology. This innovation required extensive time for writing, pre-production, and visual effects.
Principal photography concluded in late 2020 after three years of shooting, with the film’s budget estimated at $350–400 million, making it one of the most expensive films ever made. The theatrical release experienced multiple postponements, with the final delay occurring in July 2020. “Avatar: The Way of Water” premiered in London on December 6, 2022, and was released in the U.S. on December 16, 2022. Three additional sequels are planned for 2024, 2026, and 2028, though the latter two will depend on the commercial performance of “The Way of Water.”
