Storyline:
Holding a mirror to the film industry and presenting its reflections on-screen is no simple task. Often, such portrayals appear blurred, distorted, or exaggerated. However, “Autograph,” the directorial debut of Srijit Mukerji, avoids these pitfalls. Despite its mainstream song-and-dance elements, the film delivers moments that linger, prompting viewers to reflect on how the pursuit of success can alter one’s ethical stance in a world dominated by monopoly and ruthless ambition.
The film follows the life of superstar Arun Chatterjee (Prosenjit), who agrees to act in and produce a film by debutant director Shubho (Indraneil Sengupta). Arun’s decision isn’t driven by generosity but by his desire for total control. He aims to ghost-direct the film to prove he alone can ensure its success, bypassing the need for an experienced director or producer. When Shubho gets the chance to direct his dream project, he casts his live-in partner, Srinandita (Nandana Sen), opposite Arun. As production progresses, Shubho’s ambition escalates, culminating in his decision to use Arun’s confessional tape to market the film.
While many contemporary Bengali films often alienate general audiences with their complexity, “Autograph” remains accessible despite its references to works like “Hayavadana,” “Hamlet,” “Hazaar Chaurasir Maa,” and “Antigone.” Srinandita and Shubho, along with their friends (played by Dhruv Mukherjee and Sohini Paul), embody the traits of a modern, upwardly mobile urban couple. Their mix of Bengali and English in dialogue, informal address (“tui” instead of “tumi”), and relatable lifestyle create an instant connection with today’s youth, making the film more engaging for a broader audience.
