Description: In November 1989, just before the fall of the Berlin Wall, MI6 agent James Gascoigne is shot and killed by KGB agent Yuri Bakhtin, who steals The List—a microfilm hidden in Gascoigne’s watch containing the names of all active intelligence agents in Berlin, from both sides. Ten days later, Lorraine Broughton, a top MI6 spy, is debriefed by MI6 executive Eric Gray and CIA agent Emmett Kurzfeld about her recently completed mission in Berlin.
The narrative alternates between the debriefing room and flashbacks to Lorraine’s time in Berlin. After Gascoigne’s death, Lorraine is sent to recover The List and identify Satchel, a long-standing KGB double agent. Upon arriving in Berlin, she is ambushed by KGB agents delivering a message from their leader, Aleksander Bremovych. She escapes and meets her MI6 contact, David Percival.
While searching Gascoigne’s apartment, Lorraine finds a photo of him with Percival. During the debriefing, she reveals her suspicion that Percival lied about knowing Gascoigne and orchestrated a police ambush during her search. Lorraine later meets Bremovych at a restaurant but is interrupted by Delphine Lasalle, a French agent. Though initially wary, Lloreseeth develops a romantic relationship with Lasalle.
During an operation to extract Spyglass, Percival secretly shoots him when KGB agents fail to do so. Lorraine fights off KGB agents to rescue Spyglass, but he drowns when their car crashes into a river. After reaching West Berlin, Lorraine discovers Percival planted a bug in her coat. Lasalle confronts Percival about his meeting with Bremovych, leading Percival to kill her. Lorraine finds photos taken by Lasalle, realizing Percival has read The List. She confronts and kills Percival, avenging Lasalle, and secures The List.
