Description: “Asylum,” released in 2005, is a gripping drama set in Britain during the early 1960s. The film follows Stella Raphael (Natasha Richardson), a restless and dissatisfied wife married to Max (Hugh Bonneville), a psychiatrist employed at an isolated mental institution. Stella’s life takes a dramatic turn when she becomes entangled in a passionate affair with Edgar (Marton Csokas), a patient at the asylum. Edgar’s dangerous nature is evident, as he brutally murdered his wife in a fit of jealousy.
Despite Edgar’s violent history, Stella is drawn to his intensity, and their relationship deepens. While Max remains oblivious, Dr. Peter Cleave (Sir Ian McKellen), who harbors his own obsession with Stella, becomes suspicious of the affair. However, Edgar refuses to admit to his involvement, leaving Cleave frustrated.
When Edgar’s request for release is denied, he escapes the asylum. Stella, attempting to return to her routine, resumes her roles as a mother to her son, Charlie, and a wife to Max. However, during the Christmas season, she is contacted by an associate of Edgar, who arranges a meeting in London. Using shopping trips as a cover, Stella continues her affair with Edgar. Eventually, Edgar grows weary of the secrecy and demands Stella choose between him and her family.
Soon after, Cleave confronts Stella, revealing his knowledge of her trips to London and threatening to have her committed to the asylum. Fearing the consequences, Stella flees to join Edgar, and the two live a secluded, unconventional life together, constantly evading the authorities.
