Description: Asuran is a 2019 film set in the 1980s Tirunelveli district. The story follows Sivasaami, his wife Pachaiyamma, and their children, Chidambaram and Velmurugan. The family, belonging to the Dalit community, lives as farmers in Thekkoor village. Sivasaami shares a close bond with his older son, Velmurugan, but has a strained relationship with his younger son, Chidambaram. Narasimhan, an upper-caste landlord from Vadakoor, pressures the family to sell their 3 acres of land for a factory, which they refuse.
Conflict arises when Narasimhan’s son attacks Pachaiyamma, prompting Velmurugan to retaliate and severely injure him and his men. Velmurugan is arrested, forcing Sivasaami to humiliate himself before the landlord’s village to secure his release. Upon learning of his father’s humiliation, Velmurugan beats Narasimhan, leading to his brutal murder by Narasimhan’s henchmen.
Grief-stricken, Pachaiyamma and the family seek justice. A year later, Chidambaram avenges his brother’s death by killing Narasimhan. Witnessing the act, Sivasaami helps Chidambaram escape, but they are pursued by Kariyan, a hunter hired by Narasimhan’s men. Sivasaami defeats Kariyan and his men but spares their lives.
In a flashback, Sivasaami recalls his past as a moonshine brewer and servant to a landlord named Viswanathan. His efforts to regain his community’s Panchami land, seized illegally by landlords, add depth to his character and motivations. The film highlights themes of caste oppression, justice, and resilience.
