The film was re-edited by Miramax Films for North American audiences, which included cutting approximately 21 minutes of content and dubbing it into English with an American voice cast. The English script introduced new jokes tailored for the American audience, incorporating references to modern popular culture. For instance, Edifis frequently refers to Getafix as a ‘droid,’ a pun subtly hinted at in the French version through the actor’s North-African accent. The American version also altered character portrayals, with Obelix appearing more intelligent than usual. The dubbed dialogue uses some original English names, while others were borrowed from the American translation of the original comic or newly created. Minor characters, like the pirate crew, were given names of famous rock musicians, accompanied by a ‘let’s rock and roll!’ cheer.
For other markets, the English subtitles are direct translations of the French dialogue, with names adjusted to match the original comic’s English translation. The DVD release in Australia by Madman Entertainment includes two discs: one with the original French version featuring multiple language subtitles and the other with the Miramax edit.”
