Description: In the 2014 Japanese film *As the Gods Will*, high school student Shun Takahata, who often indulges in violent video games, unexpectedly finds himself thrust into a deadly game during an otherwise ordinary school day. After complaining about his monotonous life, Shun and his classmates are forced to play a fatal version of Daruma-san ga koronda (a traditional Japanese children’s game). The penalty for losing is death. While all of Shun’s classmates perish, he survives by pressing a hidden button on the Daruma doll’s back just before the timer runs out.
Following this harrowing experience, Shun reunites with his friend Ichika Akimoto, and together they are led to the school gym. There, they face a new challenge: a deadly game involving a giant beckoning cat (Maneki Neko). Students dressed as mice must toss a bell into a hoop attached to the cat’s collar, all while avoiding being crushed or devoured. With the help of Takeru Amaya, a fellow student who seems to take pleasure in the chaos, Shun and Ichika manage to survive. However, Takeru eliminates the other remaining players, leaving only the trio alive. They are then rendered unconscious by a sleeping gas released by the beckoning cat.
Upon awakening, Shun, Ichika, and Takeru find themselves inside a colossal cube hovering over Tokyo, joined by other students who have survived similar deadly games across Japan and beyond. Their next challenge is Kagome Kagome, a blindfolded game where participants must identify which of four floating Kokeshi dolls is positioned behind them within 10 seconds after a short song ends. Failure results in a lethal red laser strike, while success causes the dolls to explode, releasing an answer key that allows the survivors to progress. Shun saves Shoko Takase during this game, and they later reunite with Ichika and Yukio Sanada, narrowly escaping death once again.
The film is a gripping tale of survival, as Shun and the remaining students navigate a series of increasingly perilous games orchestrated by mysterious forces.
