Description: “Art of Love,” directed by Betty Kaplan, presents a story centered around a male protagonist referred to simply as “the Writer,” portrayed by Esai Morales. He is an older, indifferent man surrounded by women who admire him despite his aloofness. His life takes a turn when he begins receiving mysterious messages from an unknown admirer, delivered through various creative means such as chalk writings on sidewalks or notes hidden in books. These messages eventually lead him to Li Chao, a young Chinese immigrant played by Kunjue Li, who seeks to break free from her circumstances.
The two embark on a journey marked by laughter, confusion, and discomfort as they explore the city, create art installations, and engage in superficial conversations. Despite Li’s initial declaration of being a lesbian, their relationship becomes physical, further complicating the narrative.
The film leans heavily on stereotypes and problematic tropes. Li’s character embodies submissiveness and traditionalism, often expressing views that reinforce cultural clichés, such as how her love for reading makes her an outlier in her community. The portrayal of lesbianism is reduced to a situational phase rather than a genuine identity. Additionally, the story perpetuates the outdated notion that younger women pursue older men, rather than the opposite.
The writing is often shallow, highlighting these flaws. For instance, the Writer’s self-absorbed musings about why Li “was so insistent in possessing him” reflect a tired narrative that caters to male fantasies.
While the film occasionally attempts to appeal to the female perspective, it remains overwhelmingly male-centric. Ultimately, “Art of Love” offers little that distinguishes it from typical, clichéd storytelling, particularly in its portrayal of relationships and character dynamics.
For example, Li’s early assertion of her sexual orientation is quickly overshadowed by her involvement with her male professor, further undermining the film’s attempt at depth or originality.
