Storyline:
Broadcast journalist Edward R. Murrow introduces the film with a prologue, showcasing scenes from Georges Méliès’ 1902 film *A Trip to the Moon*, inspired loosely by Jules Verne’s *From the Earth to the Moon*. The prologue also features the launch of an unmanned rocket and footage of Earth receding into the distance.

Set in 1872, the story follows English gentleman Phileas Fogg (David Niven), who confidently claims he can travel around the world in eighty days. He wagers £20,000 (equivalent to approximately £1.8 million in 2015) with skeptical members of the Reform Club, betting he can return by 8:45 pm exactly eighty days later.

Accompanied by his clever valet, Passepartout (Cantinflas), Fogg embarks on a daring global journey. They manage tight steamship schedules by spending generously to speed up their travels. Their adventure begins in Paris, where they take off in a gas balloon named *La Coquette* after discovering a blocked mountain train tunnel. Mistakenly landing in Spain, Passepartout finds himself in a comical bullfight before they proceed to Brindisi.

Meanwhile, suspicions arise that Fogg has stolen £55,000 (around £4.9 million today) from the Bank of England. Police Inspector Fix (Robert Newton) is dispatched by Scotland Yard to follow Fogg, waiting for a warrant to arrest him at British ports.

In India, Fogg and Passepartout save Princess Aouda (Shirley MacLaine), a young widow, from her late husband’s funeral pyre. The trio travels through Hong Kong, Yokohama, San Francisco, and the Wild West, including the Sioux Nation. After crossing the Atlantic, Fogg is arrested in Liverpool by Inspector Fix, just hours away from winning his bet.

At the jail, Fix reveals that the real culprit has been caught in Brighton. Although exonerated, Fogg misses his deadline and loses the wager—but gains the affection of Princess Aouda.
