The story begins in London on October 2, 1872. Phileas Fogg, a wealthy yet solitary British gentleman, leads a modest and meticulously structured life. Though little is known about his social engagements, he is a member of the Reform Club, where he spends most of his time. After dismissing his previous valet, James Forster, for delivering shaving water at the wrong temperature, Fogg hires a Frenchman named Jean Passepartout as his new assistant.
At the Reform Club, Fogg becomes engaged in a debate sparked by an article in The Daily Telegraph. The article claims that, with the opening of a new railway section in India, it is now possible to travel around the world in 80 days. Intrigued, Fogg accepts a wager of £20,000 (equivalent to roughly £2.3 million today) from his fellow club members to complete this journey within the specified time. Accompanied by Passepartout, Fogg departs from London by train at 8:45 p.m. on October 2. To win the bet, he must return to the club by the same time on December 21, exactly 80 days later. They carry the remaining £20,000 of Fogg’s fortune to cover their travel expenses.
Fogg and Passepartout arrive in Suez on schedule. However, their journey takes an unexpected turn when they are shadowed by Detective Fix, a Scotland Yard officer who has been dispatched to apprehend a bank robber. Due to Fogg’s vague resemblance to the suspect, Fix mistakenly identifies him as the criminal. Unable to obtain a warrant in time, Fix boards the steamer “Mongolia” bound for Bombay, where he befriends Passepartout without revealing his true intentions. Meanwhile, Fogg incentivizes the steamer’s engineer to speed up their journey, allowing them to reach Bombay two days ahead of schedule.
