Description: The 2018 film *Arctic* follows Overgård, played by Mads Mikkelsen, as he struggles to survive in the Arctic Circle after a plane crash. Living in the wreckage of his aircraft, his daily routine includes checking fishing lines, mapping the area, and operating a distress beacon powered by a hand-crank dynamo. One day, his fish supply is stolen by a polar bear. Shortly after, a helicopter responds to his beacon but crashes during its landing attempt. The pilot dies, and the passenger sustains severe injuries, leaving her unconscious. Overgård tends to her wounds, brings her to his plane, and discovers that she doesn’t speak English. Her only sign of responsiveness is squeezing his hand.
Returning to the helicopter wreckage, Overgård finds essential supplies, including food, medical equipment, a sled, and a map. The map reveals a seasonal refuge that could offer rescue, but it’s several days away. As the woman’s condition fails to improve, Overgård decides to embark on the perilous journey to the refuge, dragging her on the sled.
The trek becomes increasingly challenging. He encounters a steep slope not marked on the map and is forced to alter their route, adding extra days to their journey. During a night in a cave, a polar bear is drawn to the smell of their cooking fish, but Overgård manages to scare it away with a distress flare. The next day, the woman’s health deteriorates further. Believing she is near death, Overgård makes the difficult decision to leave her behind, continuing his journey alone but leaving her with a photo and some supplies.
