Description: In the early 1940s, Apurba Kumar Roy, commonly known as Apu, is an unemployed graduate living in a rented room in Tala, Calcutta. Despite his teacher’s encouragement to pursue higher education, Apu is unable to afford it. To make ends meet, he gives private tutoring while dedicating his time to writing a novel inspired by his own life, hoping to publish it someday.
One day, Apu reunites with his old friend Pulu, who invites him to a village in Khulna to attend the wedding of Pulu’s cousin, Aparna. However, on the wedding day, it is revealed that the groom suffers from a severe mental illness, leading the bride’s mother to cancel the marriage. According to Hindu tradition, if the bride is not wed during the auspicious hour, she will remain unmarried forever. Initially hesitant, Apu eventually agrees to marry Aparna to save her from this fate.
After the wedding, Apu faces personal challenges and isolates himself, leaving his child in the care of Aparna’s parents. Over the years, he discards the manuscript of his novel and drifts across India. Pulu later discovers Apu’s son, Kajal, living in neglect and urges Apu to take responsibility as a father.
Reluctantly, Apu returns to his in-laws’ home to reunite with Kajal. At first, Kajal struggles to accept him as a father, but eventually, they bond as friends. Together, they return to Calcutta to start a new chapter in their lives.
