**Plot Summary:**
During the Vietnam War, U.S. Army Special Forces Colonel Walter E. Kurtz has reportedly gone rogue, leading an unauthorized and brutal guerrilla campaign against NVA and PLAF forces in Cambodia. Operating without approval or support from his superiors, Kurtz commands a group of American and Montagnard troops who regard him as a godlike figure.
Captain Benjamin L. Willard, a weary MACV-SOG operative, is called to I Field Force headquarters in Nha Trang. There, he is briefed by Army commanders and a CIA officer, who task him with a critical mission: to locate and “terminate Kurtz’s command with extreme prejudice.”
Initially conflicted, Willard boards a U.S. Navy river patrol boat (PBR) under Chief Petty Officer “Chief” Phillips, accompanied by crew members Lance, “Chef,” and “Mr. Clean.” Their journey up the Nùng River toward Kurtz’s outpost begins after coordinating with Lieutenant Colonel Bill Kilgore, commander of the 1st Squadron, 9th Cavalry Regiment. Kilgore, a passionate surfer, initially hesitates but agrees to escort them after discovering that Lance is a renowned surfer. The squadron launches a dramatic dawn assault, using Wagner’s “Ride of the Valkyries” as they strike Viet Cong forces.
As Willard and the crew progress upriver, tensions rise between Willard and Chief, who prioritizes routine patrols over the mission. Revealing partial details of his assignment, Willard gains Chief’s cooperation. Studying Kurtz’s background, Willard is struck by the colonel’s decision to abandon a prestigious Pentagon role for Special Forces, a move that limited his career advancement.
