*Aparajito*, also known as *Aparajito – The Undefeated*, is a 2022 Indian Bengali-language biographical film directed and co-written by Anik Dutta. Produced by Firdausul Hasan and Probal Halder under the banner of Friends Communication, the film is based on the making of Satyajit Ray’s iconic film *Pather Panchali*. Shot in black and white, the movie features Jeetu Kamal in the lead role as Aparajito Ray.
Set in the mid-1950s, the story follows the struggles and journey of a young filmmaker, Aparajito Ray, as he creates his first full-length feature film, *Pather Panchali*. Inspired by the renowned Bengali novel of the same name by Bibhutibhushan Mukhopadhyay, the narrative highlights the challenges and determination of a budding artist.
The film has garnered significant attention in global cinema and received an international award at the Cannes Film Festival. Filming began on November 12, 2021, and concluded on December 15, 2021, with locations including rural Bolpur and Kolkata. Research for the project was conducted by Sreeparna Mitra and Prithwiraj Choudhury, while makeup and prosthetics were handled by Somnath Kundu. The costumes were designed by Suchismita Dasgupta, and the production design was led by Ananda Addhya.
*Aparajito* premiered at the National Museum of Indian Cinema on May 2, 2022, as part of a special screening organized by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting to commemorate Satyajit Ray’s 101st birth anniversary. The film was released in theaters on May 13, 2022.
