Description: Anwar, released in 2007, is a Hindi film set in Lucknow, India. The story revolves around Anwar, a middle-class young man living with his mother and sister, Suraiya. Anwar is deeply involved in researching ancient Hindu temples. The family rents out a room to a poor widow and her beautiful daughter, Mehru, with whom Anwar falls in love.
Confident of Mehru’s feelings for him, Anwar is shocked to discover that her heart is set on moving to America. Mehru is weary of the dust, the scorching heat, and the hardships of her poverty-stricken life in India. Anwar explains that it would be impossible for him to take her to the U.S., as it is beyond his means. Instead, Mehru becomes interested in Udit, an engineer who plans to settle in America.
As Mehru begins a relationship with Udit, Anwar learns of Udit’s intention to marry her before moving to the U.S. Anwar warns Udit about the potential consequences, given the differences in their religions—Mehru is Muslim, and Udit is Hindu. He cautions that Mehru’s strict and conservative family could ruin their plans or even endanger their lives.
Ignoring Anwar’s advice, Udit proceeds with his plan. Heartbroken, Anwar confesses his love to Mehru, pleading with her not to leave him. However, Mehru admits she never loved Anwar and ultimately elopes with Udit.
Later, witnessing Mehru’s mother’s anguish, Anwar impulsively reveals the truth to her family. Mehru’s uncle, along with two others, tracks down the couple. Tragically, they shoot Udit and bring a wounded Mehru back home. Overwhelmed by Udit’s death, Mehru takes her own life, marking a devastating end to the story.
