**Storyline:**
Rhoda Williams, a brilliant 17-year-old with a passion for astronomy, is thrilled to be accepted into MIT. Celebrating with friends, she drinks and decides to drive home intoxicated. While distracted by a radio story about a newly discovered Earth-like planet, she crashes into a stopped car, leaving John Burroughs in a coma and killing his pregnant wife and young son. After serving a four-year prison sentence, Rhoda isolates herself, working as a janitor at her former high school.
As news about the mirror Earth continues, Rhoda enters an essay contest for a chance to travel there. Meanwhile, she encounters John at the crash site and visits his home under the pretense of offering free cleaning services. John, unaware of her identity, invites her back, and they gradually form a bond, eventually becoming intimate.
Rhoda wins the contest and is selected to travel to the other Earth. John pleads with her to stay, hoping for a future together. However, Rhoda reveals her true identity, causing John to angrily dismiss her. Later, Rhoda learns about the “broken mirror” theory, suggesting that events on the two Earths diverged after the discovery. She returns to John, claiming his family might still be alive on the other Earth, and leaves him her ticket. John eventually accepts the opportunity and becomes one of the first civilians to travel to the mirror Earth.
Four months later, Rhoda encounters her alternate self from Earth 2, standing outside her house on a foggy day.
