Description: In a technologically advanced, dystopian future, humanity is governed by a system where everyone is required to have an ocular implant. This device records everything a person sees while also providing augmented-reality displays and access to personal information for law enforcement. Crime investigations involve detectives reviewing recorded footage to determine guilt or innocence.
Detective Sal Friedland, part of the metropolitan police force, encounters a young woman who causes a glitch in his implant. When he reviews his recordings, he finds all footage of her mysteriously erased. Sal is later assigned to a series of homicide cases where the victims’ visual records of their deaths are replaced with the killer’s perspective, obscuring their identity.
It’s revealed that the victims had hired someone to delete incriminating or embarrassing parts of their visual records. Detectives suspect the woman Sal encountered, who possesses the ability to manipulate the system. Sal goes undercover, posing as a stockbroker who seeks her services to delete a fabricated encounter with a prostitute. Despite a planned arrest attempt by his team, she escapes, covering her tracks skillfully.
As Sal and the woman develop a personal relationship, it turns intimate. During a second attempt to capture her, she discovers Sal’s true identity and flees, resulting in the death of one of his colleagues. She then torments Sal by forcing him to relive his worst memories and causing hallucinations of a burning building.
The story explores themes of privacy, identity, and the consequences of technological control in a society where every action is monitored.
