**Plot Summary:**
At a classified U.S. government facility called Area X, Lena, a cellular biology professor and Army veteran, is interrogated as the only survivor of an expedition into an enigmatic zone known as the “Shimmer.” Three years earlier, the Shimmer originated from a meteor that struck a lighthouse on the southern U.S. coast and has been steadily expanding since. Lena’s husband, Kane, a Green Beret, was part of a prior mission into the Shimmer and mysteriously reappears at their home after a year-long absence. However, his health rapidly deteriorates, prompting Lena to seek medical help. Instead, they are intercepted by government forces and taken to Area X.
With Kane in critical condition, Dr. Ventress, a government psychologist, reveals the nature of the Shimmer to Lena. Despite numerous teams venturing into the zone, none have returned except Kane. Ventress organizes a new scientific expedition into the Shimmer, which includes Lena, physicist Josie Radek, geomorphologist Cassie “Cass” Sheppard, and paramedic Anya Thorensen.
Upon entering the Shimmer, the team experiences surreal events and strange phenomena. They lose track of time, their equipment fails, and they encounter bizarre mutated flora and fauna. During their journey, Lena has flashbacks to her past infidelity, which occurred before Kane’s disappearance. The team stumbles upon an abandoned military base, where they find a chilling video message from Kane’s expedition, revealing horrifying mutations and the unknown dangers lurking within the Shimmer.
