Description: After a whirlwind romance, controversial stand-up comedian Henry McHenry (Adam Driver) announces his engagement to renowned soprano Ann Desfranoux (Marion Cotillard). Soon after, they welcome their daughter Annette, who is depicted as a wooden marionette puppet. Their marriage becomes strained as Henry struggles to care for Annette while Ann’s career continues to soar. Ann begins having disturbing dreams, including visions of six women accusing Henry of past abuse and a nightmare of him nearly killing her. As Henry’s career declines due to an onstage breakdown, he grows resentful of Ann’s success. In an attempt to repair their relationship, the couple embarks on a private cruise, but the trip ends in tragedy when a drunk Henry accidentally pushes Ann overboard during a storm, resulting in her death.
After her mother’s passing, baby Annette mysteriously gains the ability to sing in her mother’s voice, which begins to haunt Henry. Although cleared of any legal wrongdoing, Henry faces financial struggles without Ann’s income. He reaches out to Ann’s former accompanist (Simon Helberg), proposing they use Annette’s singing talent for a musical act. Reluctantly, the accompanist agrees, and Baby Annette’s performances become an international sensation.
However, Henry’s life continues to unravel as he battles alcoholism and guilt. One night, he hears Annette singing a song that was once special only to him and Ann. Fueled by rage, Henry confronts the accompanist, who insinuates that he might be Annette’s real father. In a fit of anger, Henry kills him, an act witnessed by Annette.
The story reaches its climax during a final performance at the “Hyperbowl,” where Annette refuses to sing and instead declares to the audience, “Daddy kills people,” exposing Henry’s dark secrets.
