The narrative unfolds in mid-1971, during the Pakistani occupation of Dhaka, a time of great tension and brutality. One morning, Anil receives a letter from Rupeshwar School’s Head Master, informing him of his father’s death at the hands of the Pakistani military and urging him not to return to the village, as it is unsafe for young Hindu men. Despite the warning, Anil decides to journey to Rupeshwar, leaving his job behind and boarding a bus. The trip is fraught with uncertainty and danger.
Along the way, Anil meets Ayub Ali, a middle-aged man traveling with his wife and daughter. Initially, Ali appears dull and reactionary, but Anil soon begins to respect his humanity. Ali advises Anil to conceal his Hindu identity and use the name Mohsin, his brother-in-law, for safety. The journey becomes a profound experience for Anil, filled with challenges and revelations.
