**Plot Summary:**
Set in 1955, the story follows Harry Angel, a private investigator from New York City, who is hired by a mysterious man named Louis Cyphre. Cyphre tasks Harry with locating John Liebling, a singer known as Johnny Favorite, who suffered severe neurological damage during World War II. Favorite’s condition led to the disruption of a contract with Cyphre involving unspecified collateral. Cyphre suspects that a hospital, where Favorite was treated for shell shock, has falsified records.
Harry visits the hospital and uncovers that the records were indeed tampered with by a doctor named Albert Fowler. Confronting Fowler, Harry learns that the doctor was bribed years ago to help a man and woman take Favorite away. When Harry pressures Fowler for more information, the doctor dies under suspicious circumstances.
Despite wanting to end the job, Harry continues the search after Cyphre offers him a large sum of money. His investigation leads him to Favorite’s wealthy fiancée, Margaret Krusemark, who claims Favorite is dead. Harry then discovers that Favorite had a secret affair with a woman named Evangeline Proudfoot, who has since passed away but left behind a 17-year-old daughter, Epiphany Proudfoot.
Epiphany is hesitant to cooperate, so Harry tracks down Toots Sweet, a former bandmate of Favorite. After a violent confrontation, Toots directs Harry back to Margaret. The next day, Harry learns that Toots has been murdered.
As Harry delves deeper, the mystery surrounding Johnny Favorite becomes increasingly dark and dangerous.
